If you are experiencing any severe pain or discomfort, you should contact your GP or NHS Direct 0845 4647 immediately.

 

If you have had sex against your will and need support you should contact your local GUM service on 01305 762 682 Monday - Friday 9.00 – 5.00pm

 

 

When is my situation an emergency?

0 – 72 hours

Emergency Contraception can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.

 

You may also have a risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

 

You may also be able to take a new type of emergency contraception pill called Ella One, up to 5 days after unprotected sex. This is only available currently from clinics and GP's.

72 hours – 5 days

An Emergency Coil can be fitted by a Doctor or Nurse up to 5 days after unprotected sex. You may also have a risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Up to 24 weeks

A termination of pregnancy can be provided. Contact your local sexual health service or GP for advice.

9 Months

Support from a range of agencies is available to help you with your baby. Contact your local sexual health service or GP for advice.

 

 

How soon to test following unprotected sex?

There is a risk of sexually transmitted infections following any episode of unprotected sex (sex without a condom). Take a test 2 weeks later.
